๐ŸŽฎ This Week in Games #399: Tencent's AI Toolchain for Game Development

Happy Friday, friend! Here's what happened this week in games:
โ€‹

  1. A trailer beat every movie and show on Netflix this week, which tells you where we are.
  2. The AI-driven RAM crisis may stretch this console generation into 2030. That's why you can't find a PS5 on a shelf in August
  3. The best-reviewed Star Wars game in 22 years shipped with 80% of its studio furloughed. Drama is the reason.
  4. Tencent's new AI game-dev toolchain that the West has no answer to.

GTA 6 Beat Every Movie and Show on Netflix. With a Trailer.

31.1 million views in four days. Number one in 87 of 93 countries. And Miami is now considering renaming its airport.

โ€‹Rockstar's 27-minute extended look at GTA 6 pulled 31.1 million views on Netflix between August 27th and 30th, making it the most-watched title on the entire platform that week in any category. It beat The Whisper Man, a Robert De Niro thriller, which did 23.2 million. It hit number one in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix tracks. Then it went to YouTube after a six-hour exclusivity window and pulled another 17 million there. US mobile app usage on Netflix jumped nearly 50% versus a typical Thursday. Web visits were up 125%. The platform briefly buckled under the concurrent load.

This was top-of-funnel marketing, not fan service. The people already watching Rockstar's YouTube channel were always going to see this. Putting it on the Netflix home screen put it in front of everyone else. And it worked: pre-order tracking data shows an uptick, with roughly $500 million in pre-order revenue already banked.

The best detail is buried at the end of the video: captured on PlayStation 5. Not PS5 Pro. The base model. Whoever cut that deal at Sony has earned their year.

Oh, and Miami-Dade County officials are now openly exploring a marketing partnership with Rockstar, including temporarily rebranding parts of Miami International Airport as Vice City Airport. Do it. Do it today!

โ€‹The full breakdown of who paid whom and why it worked.

You Cannot Buy a PS5 Right Now.
That Is Not an Accident.

Roughly 80% of GTA 6 pre-orders are on PlayStation. Hardware is sold out in August. And the RAM crisis has quietly rewritten the console roadmap.

Sony is running away with this generation, and GTA 6 is about to widen the gap. Sensor Tower puts PlayStation at roughly three-quarters of GTA 6 pre-orders, and the real number worldwide is probably higher. The PS5 Pro is sold out almost everywhere at $750, in August, three months before launch. Price is not an object for this buyer.

The RAM shortage, driven by AI data center demand, is the thing shaping everything underneath. Sony has an installed base near 100 million units, and its CEO has said plainly the focus now is monetising current PS5 owners rather than rushing to the next box. That is not a defensive position. It is the right one. A GTA-sized release turns a large installed base into an active installed base, and active players buy more games.

Here is the loop worth watching. RAM prices push hardware costs up. That likely puts a PS6 north of $1,000. High price means slow adoption; slow adoption means a small addressable market; a small market means developers keep shipping for PS5, which removes the reason to buy a PS6 at all. The most likely outcome is that this console generation runs much longer than normal, with Sony milking a 120 to 150 million unit base for a few extra years until the AI bubble deflates and memory gets cheap again.

The Best-Reviewed Star Wars Game in 22 Years Shipped With 80% of Its Team Unpaid.

An 86 on Metacritic. Top of the Steam sales chart. And a studio that ran out of money weeks before launch while two founders sued each other.

Star Wars Zero Company launched August 27th to the best reviews a Star Wars game has had in over two decades: 86 on Metacritic, 87 on Xbox, top seller on Steam at a $50 price point, outperforming both Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor on their Steam launches. Genuinely excellent work by a team of XCOM and Firaxis veterans.

โ€‹Then Game File reported that Bit Reactor furloughed roughly 80% of its staff weeks before that launch. Furloughed, not laid off, meaning still technically employed and receiving no wage. A skeleton crew was kept on for post-launch bugs. The studio confirmed it, and was clear that this was Bit Reactor's own decision, not EA's and not Disney's. Both fulfilled their publishing obligations. The studio simply ran out of money before its first game shipped.

Underneath it is a co-founder lawsuit that has been running since July 2024. Alison Kelly, former COO, claims she was a co-owner and was pushed out. Greg Foertsch says she was never a co-owner. It is not set to go to trial until 2027. A former staffer put the mood plainly on LinkedIn: watching EA, Disney, and senior studio folks post 10/10 celebration content while the team who built it sits furloughed.

The truth is that this game probably should not have been greenlit at this budget. Turn-based tactics is a beloved but genuinely small genre, and no amount of Star Wars licensing changes the ceiling. Marvel's Midnight Suns had a bigger IP, a better-resourced studio, and strong reviews, and Take-Two called it a commercial failure. If you want to build in this space, scope it for what the market actually is. And co-founder disputes, not runway or product failure, remain the number one reason studios die.

Tencent Just Released an AI Toolchain for Game Development. The West Has Nothing Like It.

Six proprietary platforms covering animation, agents, rendering, anti-cheat, voice and testing. And an investment thesis that defines "evergreen" as $500 million a year.

โ€‹Tencent unified its internal technology under a single brand, Tencent Games Central Tech, and showed it at Gamescom. The portfolio includes Motus, an end-to-end AI pipeline for 3D character animation covering rigging, skinning, motion generation from text, video or keyframes, and refinement. GIGA builds AI agents that act inside virtual worlds. MagicDawn handles rendering. ACE is anti-cheat. GVoice does AI noise reduction and real-time speech translation. WeTest uses AI agents to playtest builds. Motus is already deployed across PUBG Mobile, Honor of Kings, Delta Force, League of Legends, and Teamfight Tactics.

The obvious question is where the Western equivalent is. Going from a 2D image to a usable 3D game object is still surprisingly unsolved, and the clear market leader in that space right now is Tripo, also Chinese. Tencent can subsidise all of this because games are a minority of its revenue, and it can distribute it across the rest of its business. No Western tech giant has that structure anymore, because none of them make games at that scale.

Alongside this, Tencent's Nahwan Lee gave an interview that put a number on the company's investment filter. "Evergreen" means $500 million in annual gross revenue, or 5 million DAU on mobile and 2 million on PC for live services. Getting there takes a studio two to three games and about ten years. So they back teams rather than titles and treat short-term failures as noise. He denied any Western pullback, framed the Lightspeed LA layoffs as studio-level decisions, and called UGC a generational bet on both players and creators. Polished, on-message, and not especially surprising, but the ten-year patience horizon is the part worth internalising.
